101 Jefferson St., Braintree MA 02184; Tel. 781.843.6513
This is a Golf Digest four-star value golf course located 15 miles from Boston. Opened in 1945, this Boston area golf course plays host to numerous area tournaments and charity events. The golf course itself is considered tough, especially the back nine. It has a classic New England landscape, with goose ponds and woods. A very homey kind of course, Braintree is worth taking it slow. Green fees are $29-$38.
George Wright Golf Course
420 West St., Hyde Park MA 02136; Tel. 617.364.2300
This golf course is another old Donald Ross design located just outside Boston (5 miles). The golf course has been described as 'visually creepy,' meaning plenty of blind shots and deceptive distances. Received three stars from Golf Digests Places to Play. Green fees are $25 to $35.
Larry Gannon Municipal Golf Club
60 Great Woods Rd., Lynn MA 01904; Tel. 781.592.8238
This golf course resides about 15 miles outside of downtown Boston. Built in 1929 and designed by Wayne Stiles, this short course (6,106 yards) offers some fun holes, with water coming frequently into play. It's easy to miss the views from some of the greens because they're so tough it's hard to think about anything else.
Newtown Commonwealth Golf Course
212 Kenrick St., Newton MA 02458; Tel. 617.630.1971
First opened in 1897, this ancient Boston golf course received a Donald Ross makeover in the 1920s. It's short, only 5,313-yards, but it's minutes from downtown Boston and a local favorite. The course features plenty of hazards, none as severe as wearing a Yankees cap however. Green fees are around $30, extremely cheap.
Shaker Hills Golf Course - Boston-Massachusetts.com Editor's Pick
146 Shaker Rd., Harvard MA 01451; Tel. 978.772.2227
This Harvard golf course, just 35-miles outside of Boston, received four stars in Golf Digests 'Places to Play' of 2002. This par-72, 6,850 yard course is exceptional. Despite a $65 green fee, this golf course is still considered one of the best golf values in the country. The fairways are tight, surrounded by natural rock outcroppings and Northeastern forest filled with abundant wildlife.
